Richard and Pascal friendship is something I didn't know I needed to write
#wips#richard windor#pascal#fan art#mine#brain decided 4 AM was a good time to resume the graces fixation and I've been going ever since#this is for the sequel to my long fic in which Richard has ANOTHER mental breakdown after something bad happens to Asbel and Sophie#Pascal cheers him up bc she's good at cheering people up. She's actually a very sweet and generous person beneath her carefree whimsy#Like that post battle scene where she tries to give Richard her staff bc she thinks he's jealous of it 😂#In this fic she's been helping him this whole time from escorting him through the Wallbridge ruins to aiding w the valkines crisis#He's shocked that he never truly realized how much she's been there for him bc normally she's so hard to miss 😅#but his preoccupations w his other friends had been keeping him from making a new one until now#Richard needs someone to hold onto just as badly as Asbel needs someone to save#and here's Pascal radiating constant optimism and friendship just like Asbel did when they were kids#I hope I can write this as the beginnings of a beautiful friendship between them :)#I think Pascal could bring out his fun-loving side in a less trolling way than Malik and he can certainly support her endeavors#They're already swapping nicknames she's calling him 'Little Dickie' and he goes for 'Callie' in the moment 😂#there's room for romantic readings I suppose but I prefer platonic

Falling down the beautiful bujo rabbit hole yet again.
But this time it is all about physical journals rather than my (existing) electronic one.
As much I love the combination of electronic connivence and very exceedingly Aesthetic(TM) electronic journal pages (in a massive PDF full of a zillion hyperlinks) -- something I can load into the GoodNotes app and scribble on to my heart's content (handwrite on ipad, type on my keyboard, collage images from anywhere, etc etc) -- as much as I like this... there are things I don't like.
Files on the computer always feel a little to cramped for me. Fighting with the limitations of tools. No tactile sense of anything. Harder to flip back and forth between pages. Requires being on the computer (or ipad) thus always feels a little awkward for anything that isn't TYPING.
Keeping a purely functional minimalistic bullet journal or similar style thing on paper is something I have repeated done in the past, continued with for some period of time (sometimes lengthy, sometimes brief) but discarded bc the VISUAL MESS OF IT ALL turned me off.
I ... have weird sensitivities around issues of design -- information design, text design, graphic design, user interface design, product design, process design, etc etc etc.
Weird sensitivities and frustrations.
When things aren't beautifully designed my brain either recoils hard or just sort of starts screeeaaaaaammming and then, idk.... 😒
... I either need to DEAL with the fact that I'm willing to live with a yucky looking thing or I abandon the thing for something else that isn't yuck/recoil or brain-scream-inducing.
Honestly, I can live with the yucky looking thing. For instance, most of my fandom presence is a fucking mess, like my history of free broken tumblr themes (makes it harder for anyone to find anything on my tumblr-- is that really a negative? Hmmm...... 😏). Whenever my brain SCREAMS when looking at my tumblr or DW, I put it on my to do list but never get around to it because mostly it isn't really my problem -- ahahaha, sorry followers. I do try to keep my active sideblogs in visually good shape/info-design though, although all of my sideblogs are quiet right now.
Anyhow, the reasons why I have abandoned so many PAPER-BASED planners is because they were either designed entirely wrong to begin with (back in the day, prior to things like an iPad, I designed and printed my own planners!) or because I didn't like how messy they became.
Thus digital planners. Which I have been using for a few years but with so many issues because, deep down, they lack the affordances of paper that I want.
So.
(Long sad sigh of resignation)
I have spent much of yesterday evening and absolutely all of today (so far) researching ideas and planning out a beautifully design, hand-illustrated bujo that will go in my brand new (purchased yesterday at one of my fave bookstores) Leuchttrum A5 grid-page notebook with nice(!!) 120g paper which means it should be just thick enough to not have YUCKY BLEED THROUGH.
Idk about me sometimes
#at least my weird sensitivities and frustrations around Everything Design#fueled oh so very much of my career during the pre-pandemic years/decades#that said--- at least once per year#if not once per idk 9 months or so#i go through a MASSIVE ARRRRRGGGHGHHHH regarding all of my tools#for tracking life projects notes on things etc etc etc and time tracking and more#and then i spent too much time optimizing my life planners/schedulers/trackers/notesystems#idk#that's me#(my resume predicts all of this)

hi I graduate from undergrad in July & my hometown is opening a new public library this summer. Do you have any tips for applying? I plan to start my MLIS degree online in about a year, and will start applying to programs in spring/summer/fall. I want to work as a library director one day I think PS thank you for your blog that I just stumbled on bc you have SO much relevant information
Sorry, I somehow missed this when you sent it last month!
My advice is mostly gleaned from exposure in both library groups/discussions and job/professional resources/reading/experience, rather than personal public library practice--I work in an academic library and I don't think there was a ton of competition (who managed to make a good impression) since night hours are not often attractive to people. (But who knows: I know my resume and cover letter were enough to get me invited for an interview, which then got me hired, and now they love me.)
If you have any library experience at all--volunteer work, working in your school library, etc.--make sure that's on your resume. (Since you're graduating undergrad, it should be fine to have things on it that go back to high school, if you did library work in high school.)
The big things I see discussed when library people talk about hiring, from the employer's side, are:
Does the applicant show they meet any requirements (i.e., if the job says "you must have a bachelor's degree or two years of work experience," make sure that between your resume and cover letter, if one is included, that they can see you meet that requirement)
Does the applicant show an understanding that working in a library is not sitting and reading all day? (Basically, don't say "I want to work at Library X because I love reading and quiet, calm environments," because public library work is unlikely to involve any of that very often)
Can you follow directions and provide accurate info? (If the job listing says to send a resume and cover letter to Person X, send a resume and cover letter to Person X, and make sure that you haven't misspelled their name or the library name, etc.)
If you're thinking "well, that's all pretty basic," yes, yes it is. AND YET.
I would check out Ask A Manager for tips on resumes and cover letters, she is so helpful and has a wealth of information in general.
If you have any connection to the library system, leverage it--it's fine to mention what the library means/meant to you; if the new library is going to be part of an existing system, use your knowledge of existing branches to get a feel for what the work environment might be like, or to give you ideas of questions to ask. If you know anyone who works or has worked there (or if you have a second-degree connection, like a parent or friend knows someone who works there), see if it's possible to ask them questions or do an informational interview about what it's like to work there.
(You can look it up, but at a minimum that means probably buying them coffee/similar beverage, asking questions and crucially not treating them as a way to sneakily get in--take their goodwill and get more knowledge, don't then try to get them to boost your app, but do remember they may tell people that you met/talked with them. I've had friends and acquaintances reach out to me when my library hires to ask things about work details, pay rate if I know it [because my stupid university won't list a pay scale for some reason], etc. Recently, someone took a coworker who is leaving out to coffee to ask him about the details of his job, since it's open and this person was applying. All of that is fine, because no one has then tried to use us to manipulate the people making hiring decisions.)
A lot will depend on your area, of course. If there is a library school nearby, the competition may be higher from what I've heard. Do apply!
#working in a library#sorry if that's all really basic but you'd be surprised at how many people don't follow directions or optimize their resumes#also send a thank-you email after any interviews and make sure that you are responsive (like replying to emails) when contacted!!!#my supervisor judges applicants REALLY hard when they take like more than one business day to respond#(they're fine if the applicant says something like “I need time for X and will get back to you” or w/e but not replying raises hackles)#(and while that obviously is a personal thing the problem with job interviews on both sides is that everyone has personal things)#the good news is that assuming the workplace has normal mature people working in it...#they aren't looking for applicants to fail and they aren't doing interviews with people unless they think the person could work out#so like they're evaluating you but already think you might be good. And you're evaluating them and think they'd be good to work for#and interviews/interactions are ways for both sides to explore that potential further#ask#library life#job tips#job search#job interview

Pro Tip: Your resume should always be a subset of your LinkedIn profile!
While it's essential to tailor your resume for specific job applications, don’t forget to keep your LinkedIn profile consistent and up-to-date. If recruiters see discrepancies between your resume and LinkedIn, it might raise unnecessary doubts, and could even cost you that dream opportunity. 😬 Take LinkedIn seriously—it's often the first place recruiters check. Make sure your profile reflects the best version of your career story! ✨
